In the second round of the 2002 NFL Draft, he was selected by the Denver Broncos, and while playing for this team, he became the youngest player to score four touchdowns in a 31-24 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. However, the Broncos traded Portis in the 2004 NFL Draft, and he signed an eight-year, $50.5 million contract with the Redskins. After a rough period of adjustment, Portis broke the team’s franchise record for the most rushing yards in a season with 1.516, and became the third runner in league history to reach 1500 yards in three of his first four seasons. However, in August 2006, he suffered from a shoulder injury which prevented him from playing for a while, but his return in the Redskins’ “Monday Night Football” game resulted in Clinton gaining 39 yards on 10 carries with one touchdown. Despite good results, he was troubled by injuries all season and left one game with a broken right arm. The Redskins decided to guarantee Portis’ 2008-09 and a part of his 2010 base salaries with a $9 million “signing bonus” after restructuring. However, during a game versus the Atlanta Falcons, Clinton suffered a concussion, left the game and had to be put on injured reserve – this injury took him four months to recover from.

The 2010 season only saw Portis in five games as various abdomen and groin injuries continued to trouble him. Finally, in February 2011 he was released by the Redskins, and Clinton eventually announced his retirement in August 2012 after making it onto the list of the 80 Greatest Redskins of All-Time.
