Cindy Marten is the recent nominee of President Joe Biden Administration for United States Deputy Secretary of Education. She has worked her whole life as an educator despite going through life hurdles. She has served as the superintendent of the San Diego Unified School District since 2013.

Cindy started her teaching journey as a class teacher, a literacy specialist, a vice-principal, and then a school principal. She has literally heightened the reputation of a school that was once stated as the lowest reputed school of San Diego. To help children and parents, she has written and published Word Crafting: Teaching Spelling, Grades K-6.

However, her work is not praised only but it has been criticized as well. Born in the year 1967 in Chicago to parents Fern Siegel and Donald Cohen, Cindy Marten is 53 years of age. Cindy turned 53 last year and she will celebrate her 54th birthday on the 18th of July 2021. Her father Donald was a lawyer and a certified public accountant who was able to speak several languages. After his retirement, Donald became popular as Don the Can Man. He turned runner and bicyclist.

Cindy’s father used to scour San Diego’s street and collect aluminum cans and send them for recycling. He scored 4 million cans and his goal was to score 8 million cans. However, on November 7th of 2014 when Donal was 80 years old, he had an accident, he was hit by a car and he died of injuries.

Cindy’s mother Fern was a CPA and community activist. She was also a president of a synagogue (Temple Emanu-El in San Carlos). she led the campaign for the mentally challenged people titled Chesed Home: Hope Village in Escondido. Probably because most of her children had some disabilities. She suffered from a heart attack in January.

Marten has an elder brother Charley Cohen who is developmentally disabled. Her sister Cynthia Minette Cohen is an adopted child and the only one without any serious disability. Cindy’s younger sister Laura was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia as a young woman.

When Cindy was just 11, her parents with family moved to San Diego so that her brother Charley could enroll in California’s special education program. Cindy was determined to be a teacher from her childhood so that she could teach her brother.

While at La Jolla Country Day, she interned at the Aseltine School, then a special education academy where Charley had studied. Further, Cindy received her Bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse in 1991. Then, she attended the University of California in 1993, San Diego to earn her Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. She received her degree in 1994.

Then, Cindy went on to work in San Diego Unified and City Heights’ Central Elementary first as a teacher, then vice-principal, and then principal. She remained the principal of the school from 2006 to 2013. then she became the San Diego Unified School District Superintendent till January 2021. today she has been nominated for United States Deputy Secretary of Education by President Joe Biden.

Cindy married her longtime boyfriend of 8 years, Sergio Marten, in 1991. Cindy’s husband at the time of their marriage was a hotel manager from Mexico City. From their marriage of over 2 decades-long, Cindy and her husband are blessed with a son named Andrew.

But their companionship, unfortunately, ended, a couple of years before. Cindy’s husband, Sergio, left the world as he died on August 21, 2016. At the time of his death, Sergio was just 57 years of age. He died suffering from a massive heart attack. Sergio first suffered from a heart attack in 2007.

The day when Sergio died, Cindy was participating in America’s Finest City Half Marathon and Sergio was admitted in the rehab. They were married for 25 years.
