Chrissie Hynde is a daughter of a part-time secretary and a Yellow Pages manager. She attended Firestone High School in her hometown Akron, and later went to Kent State University to study in their Art School. During her time at college, Chrissie became interested in vegetarianism, hippie counterculture, and Eastern mysticism.
Hynde was also very interested in UK music, so she moved to London in 1973, and found a job in an architectural firm but departed after eight months. Hynde liked the NME Rock magazine and landed a job there after meeting the rock journalist Nick Kent. Two years later, she tried to establish a band in France, before her returning to the USA (Cleveland) in 1975. Hynde went back to France in 1976 to form a group again, but was unsuccessful, and then joined The Frenchies as a singer. After failing to form a band with Mick Jones from The Clash, she joined the Masters of the Backside as a guitarist in 1977. Chrissie also spent a short time with Johnny Moped in 1977, and The Moors Murderers in 1978 before finally forming her band.

Chrissie met Pete Farndon in the spring of 1978 and selected James Honeyman-Scott and Martin Chambers to form The Pretenders, and they released their first single – “Brass in Pocket” – in 1979. The Pretenders have released 11 albums in total, and sold millions of copies worldwide which has significantly increased Chrissie Hynde’s net worth.

They divorced in 1992,and Hynde married artist Lucho Brieva in 1997, but they divorced five years later. She is an animal rights activist and supporter of PETA.
