Brenda is the daughter of (Jewish) Harvey Kaplan – also known as Harvey Kaye – from the band Spiral Starecase, and a Catholic Puerto Rican mother. She was given her opportunity in music in the early 1980s thanks to singing star Harry Belafonte, appearing in her first film called “Beat Street” portraying a singer, and her skills gained her enough recognition to earn a recording contract with Mirage Records. Her first album “Pickin’ Up Pieces” and the single “I Want Your Love” became widely popular and peaked in 9th spot of the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Charts. Her music became hits in local clubs and Brenda became the queen of House music and freestyle. In 1987, she released her sophomore album which contained the ballad “I Still Believe”, which went on to reach number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and become Brenda’s signature song. Another song entitled “What You See Is What You Get” reached the number 6 spot on the Hot Dance Club Play Charts and the album itself also went to 58th spot on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart. These provided a good start to her net worth.

Starr continued to work on music, and her songs were featured in films like “Lambada” and “License to Drive”. According to reports, Mariah Carey, who was just a background singer at the time, was endorsed by Brenda who helped her land a recording contract. Mariah Carey would eventually become one of the biggest stars for the recording company, somewhat pushing Starr out of popularity. Carey would later cover a few of Brenda’s songs like “I Still Believe”. After Starr’s album “By Heart” achieved only low sales, she was released and had to work odd jobs to support herself. Her net worth had dropped significantly at this point.

She even became a disc jockey for the program “Under the Stars”, for MIX 102.7, WNEW-FM which furthered her popularity and raised her wealth even further than before.

For her personal life, it is known that Brenda is married and has a daughter, Gianna Isabella, who earned recognition by becoming a part of the final season of “American Idol” in 2016, reaching the top 10.
