Brandon Roy grew up in his hometown Seattle, and went to the African-American Academy, elementary school. He started playing basketball in the Amateur Athletic Union, one of the biggest sports organizations in the States. Roy participated in Nate McMillan’s basketball camp in the 90’s when Nate still played for the Seattle SuperSonics. Brandon later went to Garfield High School in Seattle, and was one of the most promising players in the country.

He attended the University of Washington from 2002 to 2006 but had a lot of problems before went to the college, as he had a learning disability and it took him four attempts to finally meet the NCAA’s requirements. Brandon played for the Washington Huskies under head coach Lorenzo Romar; he averaged 6.1 points, 2.9 rebounds, one assist, and 17.2 minutes per game in his junior year. Roy got more playing time in the next biennium, and had a fantastic senior year, averaging 20.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 31.7 minutes per game. He was selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves as the 6th overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft, but was immediately traded to Portland Trail Blazers for Randy Foye.

Brandon Roy had an excellent rookie season in the NBA and was a Rookie of the Month in January, February, and March 2007. He finished the season with 16.8 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game, and was awarded Rookie of the Year with 126 of 127 votes. Roy was only the third Blazer to have won this honor after Geoff Petrie and Sidney Wicks.

He was the team’s leader in points in the next three seasons, and formed a great partnership with LaMarcus Aldridge during his five years in Portland. Roy was selected for three All-Star games in a row from 2008 to 2010, and averaged a career-high 22.6 points and 4.7 rebounds in his third season (2008-2009). He was forced to announce his retirement in the summer of 2011 due to his degenerated knees, however, Roy returned to the NBA a year later and signed for the Minnesota Timberwolves. He wasn’t the same player as before the injury, though, and averaged just 5.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists in 24.4 minutes per game. Roy’s career officially ended in May 2013 when Minnesota opted to waive him. During four years at Portland, Roy had an average yearly salary of $17 million, and $5 million in his one season with the Wolves.
