His first film was entitled “Krush Groove” in 1985, and he went on to appear in “The Cosby Show” during the same year. His appearance there helped him get work in the series “One Life to Live”, and later he became part of “L.A. Law”. The show ran from 1987 to 1994 and he started to get recognition and an increase of net worth. Around this time, he also appeared in “21 Jump Street” alongside a young Johnny Depp.

After his run in “L.A. Law”, he appeared in more films such as “Just Cause” and “Deep Impact”. He continued his film career, but in 2000 went back to television in “City of Angels”. In 2010, he portrayed the United States President Elias Martinez for “The Event”, and then went on to perform in the Broadway production of “A Streetcar Named Desire”.
