Although born in Trinidad and Tobago, Billy moved with his family to Romford, Essex, England when he was ten years old. Since his father was a musician himself, he made early contact with music and therefore discovered his interest and talent. While a teenager, Ocean sang in London clubs in order to support himself, and was soon noticed by his first manager, John Morphew, with whom he recorded his single at Pye Studios in London. Unfortunately, no further co-operation was possible since Billy’s singing style was going out of fashion and no major label would release his singles. The situation improved slightly during the next few years as he joined a band called “The Shades of Midnight” in 1969, and then recorded his first single as Les Charles called “Nashville Rain”, two years later. Billy also fronted the band “Scorched Earth” with whom he released two more singles “On The Run” and “Let’s Put Our Emotions in Motion”, both in 1974.

However, Ocean’s greatest success started during the year 1984 with the release of the album “Suddenly”, along with its main single “Caribbean Queen ( No More Love On The Run)”. The song achieved enormous international popularity, but its title was changed for different regions, so it is also known as “African” and “European Queen”, and won Billy the Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance at the 1985 Grammy Awards. Two more songs from the same album, scored great success – the album’s title track reached No.4 in both the US and UK, and “Loverboy” reached No.2 in the US Two years later, Ocean released his sixth album, “Love Zone” which also sold well and contained successful singles including “When The Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going”, which became the theme for “The Jewel of the Nile” movie and reached No.1 in UK and No.2 in the USA.
