Alice Marie Johnson (born May 30, 1955) is an American criminal justice reform advocate and former federal prisoner. Johnson was convicted in 1996 for her involvement in a Memphis cocaine trafficking organization and sentenced to life imprisonment.

In June 2018, after serving 21 years in prison, Johnson was released from the Federal Correctional Institution, Aliceville, after President Donald Trump commuted her sentence after Kim Kardashian.

Alice Marie Johnson was born in Olive Branch, Mississippi. Her parents had 9 children including Alice. The family was an agricultural crop-sharing family. Alice became pregnant while she was a sophomore in high school and later worked as a secretary. She was a single mother of five children by 1996. 

Alice lost her mother in 2013 and she felt like she would never recover from the loss of not being at her mother’s funeral since she was in prison. Meanwhile, Alice has voiced her needs as wanting to share her mother’s legacy and aspires to make her proud even if she isn’t in this world any longer.

Alice Johnson was arrested in 1993 and convicted in 1996. She was charged with 8 counts relating to her involvement in a Memphis, Tennessee-based cocaine-trafficking organization. Additionally, Johnson was also charged with money laundering and drug conspiracy. The drug operation in Memphis included over 15 individuals, and all of them described Alice Johnson as the leader in a multi-million dollar cocaine ring. The defendants also provided details of drug transactions and deliveries. 

Johnson was sentenced to a life of prison without parole in 1997. At the court hearing, the District Judge named Julia the “quintessential entrepreneur” in an operation that dealt in tons of cocaine with a “very significant” impact on the community. Her accomplices were sentenced to 19 years in prison, and a few others received 10 years.

While in prison, Alice Johnson also released a memoir where she wrote about the time she served at the Federal Medical Center, Carswell. She was a certified hospice worker in the federal prison, then got transferred to FCI Aliceville.

The staff at Aliceville vouched for Alice’s discipline. Johnson participated in a pilot program, introduced in 2016 by Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates, that provided video conferencing access to certain female federal prisoners. The program allowed the online publication Mic to record a video interview with Johnson that went viral and brought Johnson’s cause to public attention.

In her speech, Alice said,

It was real justice reform and it brought, joy, hope, and freedom to thousands of well-deserving people. I hollered, ‘Hallelujah’… The nearly 22 years I spent in prison was not wasted. God had a purpose and plan for my life. I was not delayed or denied. I was destined for such a time as this.” 

The First Step Act, which became law in 2018, reduced some mandatory minimum sentences for drug convictions, expanded good behavior credits for inmates toward early release, and changed recidivism reduction programming.
