Al Green is the sixth of ten children raised by Cora Lee and Robert G. Greene, Jr., who worked as a sharecropper. When he was 10 years old, Al started to perform together with his brothers in their own group the Green Brothers. Later, the family moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he attended high school, and where he founded the vocal group Al Greene & the Creations. Soon after, the group changed its name to Al Greene & the Soul Mates and recorded a single “Back Up Train”, which became hit, however, the following releases failed miserably, as well as their first studio album of the same name.
Nevertheless, Al continued with music, and his next album came out in 1969, entitled “Green Is Blues”, reaching No. 3 on the US R&B Charts. This encouraged Green to continue in the same music genre, and his popularity grew immensely during the 1970s.
